In 1949, Orson Welles made use of an old Portuguese trading post and fortress for his film ‘Othello’ which helped to put Essaouira in the spotlight even more. During the 60s and 70s Essaouira became the perfect place for musicians and artists to establish themselves in amidst a cosmopolitan mixture of people who had seen much of the globe and were perhaps more accepting than people where in other parts of the country. Today Essaouira continues to enjoy a rich musical and artistic legacy and the Espace Othello Gallery in Morocco creatively reflects the artistic past and present of the city in an enjoyable way.
You’ll find the Espace Othello International Gallery at 9 Rue Mohammed Layachi which is situated just behind the Sahara Hotel. The gallery was opened in 1993 and mainly showcases the work of up-and-coming artists. It displays both paintings and sculptures and is the perfect place to go if you are looking for something unique and full of meaning.
