Espace Othello Gallery - Expression of Emotion in an Artistic Mecca

Art lovers should always spend at least a little time exploring the art galleries of whatever country they visit. Art can be an insightful way to examine the culture and influences of a country, but it is also a creative expression of emotion and thought. In this way art is universal – it exceeds language boundaries and communicates thought, feelings and intentions to viewers and art lovers regardless of their background. If you plan to spend time in Essaouira, you simply have to visit the Espace Othello Gallery. This great art gallery is a fascinating place to go if you are interested in viewing works by up and coming artists.

Over the years, Essaouira has become somewhat of an artistic mecca. It started off gaining reputation as a little ‘blue and white’ town on the Atlantic coast of Morocco, but soon become a major trading post which led to a variety of people settling in the area. In 1949, Orson Welles made use of an old Portuguese trading post and fortress for his film ‘Othello’ which helped to put Essaouira in the spotlight even more. During the 60s and 70s Essaouira became the perfect place for musicians and artists to establish themselves in amidst a cosmopolitan mixture of people who had seen much of the globe and were perhaps more accepting than people where in other parts of the country. Today Essaouira continues to enjoy a rich musical and artistic legacy and the Espace Othello Gallery in Morocco creatively reflects the artistic past and present of the city in an enjoyable way.

You’ll find the Espace Othello International Gallery at 9 Rue Mohammed Layachi which is situated just behind the Sahara Hotel. The gallery was opened in 1993 and mainly showcases the work of up-and-coming artists. It displays both paintings and sculptures and is the perfect place to go if you are looking for something unique and full of meaning. Artworks can be incredibly varied in terms of interpretation and artistic style, so if you are looking to make a purchase it might be best to have a good idea of what sort of work you would most like to buy before visiting the gallery. The gallery is open daily between 9:00 and 13:00, and 15:00 and 20:00 daily.
