Asilah Arts Festival 2010

Each year the Asilah Arts Festival is hosted during the month of August, however, the 2010 edition of this historical event was hosted from the 10th to the 15th of July. It has become a vital part of the cultural expression of the town of Asilah. Visitors, as well as artists, travel from various destinations around the world to attend this artistic extravaganza. The Asilah Arts Festival was first held in 1978, and now in its 32nd year it is as popular and well attended as it has ever been.

The picturesque seaside town of Asilah is located a mere fifty kilometers from the city of Tangier, and is a preferred resort destination for both locals and foreign visitors. Its ancient fortifications and ramparts, dating as far back as 1500 BC, give the town a unique atmosphere and offer numerous historical adventures for visitors to explore. During the Asilah Arts Festival, the town comes alive with color and activity, showcasing talents from around the world. Artists, painters, dancers, musicians and writers are invited to use the festival as an exhibition platform to share their work with the public. A very special addition to this year’s lineup was the work of four extremely talented Emiratis, namely Azza Al Qubaisi, Jalal Luqman, Khalil Abdul Wahid and Mattar Bin Lahij. It was a first for the festival to display a collaborate piece of art from Emiratis, which was done in the form of mural for visitors to marvel at. At each festival, a group of artists are given the opportunity to join artistic forces and design a wall at the Medina. The public is invited to watch them work as it is an experience few have the chance to enjoy – to witness art being created.

Over and above the artwork on display, visitors to the Asilah Arts Festival can join in the celebration of the musical art world through the gifted musicians and dancers who bring vibrancy and entertainment to the event. Conferences and workshops are also hosted during the festival, where artists are able to raise international problems facing their industry and work towards finding suitable solutions. The Asilah Arts Festival is a true unique Moroccan experience.
