The Port of Safi
In the country of Morocco there are a number of ports, but the Port of Safi is considered one of the main ports that deal with commercial goods. Safi transports minerals and passengers and is an important trading and fishing port. In the 1960's, Safi received the first sardine boat within its port making it the first port to do so in the whole world.
The port of Safi is part of the geographical and economic zone of Tensift and is regarded as a natural outlet on the Atlantic. This specific area is rich in a number of minerals like notament phosphates and ores. Safi is located at 32º 19 ' 57 " North and 9º 15 ' 29 " West.
The Safi port is about 90 hectares in total and sees about 5,000,000 tons of goods coming through its port every year. The port has 10,000 meters squared of storage space available and has 43 hectares of water within in its vicinity. There are a number of quays within the port that each handle specific ranges of commercial goods.
All the draughts are nine to twelve meters long and there are a total of 89 trawlers at the Safi port. There is a transverse pier, which is 400 ml, and a principal pier, which is 1 817 ml. The network of electricity is conducted by six switchyards each of which is 7200 ml. The port usually holds 55 sardine boats, 800 fishing boats and 216 Palangries.
The harbor of Safi needs a lot of equipment and superstructures on its ground in order for it to be able to handle and process the goods coming in and going out. Some of the equipment includes electric and goliath cranes, elevators, tractors, trailers, gantries and conveyors. There is also a building site that deals specifically with maintenance and shipbuilding.
The goods that are exported out of the port of Safi include zinc, copper, manganese, phosphates and gypsum. Goods that are brought into the port are sulphur, cereals and coal. The port of Safi is an interesting place to visit if you enjoy watching the activity and the processes that occur at a busy Moroccan harbor.
