"Rissani and the edge of Sahara" Catmoj's photos around Rissani and Erfoud, Morocco [01:52]
A TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow of a travel blog to Rissani and Erfoud, Morocco by TravelPod blogger Catmoj titled "Rissani and the edge of Sahara" Catmoj's travel blog entry: "And at last to the edge of the Sahara. It's not quite the rolling dunes of Merzouga just yet, but sand has encroached on the road in some stretches, palm trees and small wooden fences of palm leaves hold the sand back. The Sahara is growing each year, spreading outwards and threatening to engulf small communities on its perimeter. The water table in southern Morocco has dropped because of a dam that was built. The positives of technology for the urban masses have negatively impacted the livelihoods of the rural poor. Wells have dried up as the underwater springs no longer flow. With little water life becomes harder and the landscape desertifies. It's hard to envision in the place of minimal water, but millions of years ago the Sahara was a seabed. There are now a plethora of fossil sellers who await our custome here, both real and fake. It seems everyone has a fossil or ten to sell. There were huge gasps when we arrived at our hotel, kasbah style with a swimming pool (trying not to think about the environmental implcations there!) Then Ali, Berber guide dressed in blue was met an even bigger, collective gasp and a distinctly New York-accented, "Oh my, but isn't he just gorgeous! Ali wears the Blue Man costume. The Blue Men came from the south of the sahara into Morocco, so called for the indigo ...

"Crossing the Sahara, Morocco, Oct 13 - 14, 2007" Modernnomad67's photos around Dakhlah [01:53]
A TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow of a travel blog to Dakhlah, Western Sahara by TravelPod blogger Modernnomad67 titled "Crossing the Sahara, Morocco, Oct 13 - 14, 2007" Modernnomad67's travel blog entry: "We spent a full day driving south, much of it along the Atlantic shoreline. The desert scenery alternated between the gray stony desert called hamada and the fields of sand dunes called ergs, overall some of the bleakest, most featureless landscape I've seen anywhere. The occasional stretches where the road ran along the seashore, though, revealed picturesque rocky bluffs and hid a number of photogenic shipwrecks. We had a truck lunch (one of those one roll, one slice of cheese, and one slice of turkey affairs that were so common with our group) in a gas station's parking lot near the military checkpoint into Western Sahara territory. There were only a few settlements south of that line, the largest being Laayoune, the territory's capital. Laayoune, however, looked like a ghost city that day, the streets almost completely deserted as people were home celebrating the Eid-Al-Fitr feast at Ramadan's end. The southern two-fifths or so of current Moroccan territory is also known as Western Sahara or sometimes Spanish Sahara because it was a Spanish colony into the 1970s. Upon Franco's death in 1975, Morocco and Mauritania both claimed part of the territory. Morocco took possession of it by marching 350000 unarmed civilians into the territory one day on signal from King Hassan ...

"Hotel Malaga, Larache" Jeremyhill's photos around Larache, Morocco [01:11]
A TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow of a travel blog to Larache, Morocco by TravelPod blogger Jeremyhill titled "Hotel Malaga, Larache" Jeremyhill's travel blog entry: "Got up at 7 today and had breakfast in the hotel. Breakfast was fruit juice, coffee and a selection of breads and cakes - flat bread buns, couscous cake, mini-croissant and a couple of other mini, French-style pastries. Like everywhere in Morocco, speed of service is not an important factor, as it is back home. Everyone takes their time, lets you take your time; no rush. After packing-up, I took my bike out of the yard and prepared to set off for Larache. The security guard was very attentive, helping me to fix my panniers onto my bike, without being asked. I paid him 20 Dirhams - just over a pound - and then left. When I put my bike away the night before, it was made clear to me by the guard on duty, that I would have to pay something for this service - he asked what time I would be leaving. In fact it was a different guard on duty when I left. Maybe they share the money between them. Leaving Tangier was a lot more straightforward than finding the hotel the night before. For a start it was light. The guard pointed me in the right direction to pick up signs for Rabat - the same way as to Larache. I was soon clear of Tangier and into the countryside, where the route divided into a new motorway - with toll booths, or the old road which I continued along. It is ironic that the old road, which I cycled today, had ...
