Taroudant is one of the most Moroccan towns. Its history, its importance and its people are a constant attractions to many visitors who specifically come to this town drawn by its charm, mysticism and magic. The famous French actor Fernandel starred in a film on Ali Baba and his thieves. The film was shot for the good part in Taroudant. The town is also called the Little Marrakech. Its medina (old town) is encircled by magnificent crenelated ramparts and thus resembles its more popular bigger brother. It has one of the most expensive hotels in Morocco: La Gazelle d'Or (The Golden Gazelle). Many famous people use to stay there including Barbara Hepworth, Michael Forbes. There is also a Jacques Chirac connecrtion: I was told his mother was born in Taroudant.

Coasting in Morocco, Asilah [05:11]
One of the most beautiful towns we encountered in Morocco was also one of the most friendly and laidback. Located on the Atlantic coast just south of Tangier, Asilah is impossibly charming. The impressive portuguese ramparts enclose a meticulously restored medina. The wide sandy beaches are some of the best in the country and draw vacationers from all over the world. Despite the tourists here, the town manages to maintain its Moroccan identity. And it made a great stop over for us for a few days.

Cité Portugaise and El Jadida [03:30]
El Jadida is located just south of Casablanca on the Atlantic coast of Morocco. In the early 1500s the Portuguese took control of the town and built a fortified medina called Mazagan called "Cite Portugaise" by the locals. Mazagan is noted by UNESCO as an "outstanding example of the interchange of influences between European and Moroccan cultures" and as an "early example of the realization of the Renaissance ideals integrated with Portuguese construction technology". The ramparts are some of the most interesting in Morocco and are great fun for the local kids to jump off of. There are several other interesting sites within the walled medina including the five sided lighthouse (now the minaret of the grand mosque), the Church of the Assumption, the communal bakery and the impressive Portuguese Cistern which was used in George Orwell's film Othello.
