Globe Trekker - Morocco with Ian Wright [33:55]
Ian Wright travels to Morocco on the Northwestern tip of Africa. It's a country of stark desert, high mountain ranges, and some of the most richly cultured cities in the world. He begins his journey in the port of Tangier, where most travellers enter the country. He shares a ride with an American businesswoman far as the small market town of Chaouen, and picks up some valuable tips about travelling in Morocco. He then hitches to the walled city of Fez, through the Rif mountains, the country's main Hashish growing region. Fez remains the most complete medieval city in the Arab world, and is Morocco's religious capital. Ian spends a day exploring the Medina and winding back-alleys, before heading for the hammam, where he experiences a violent Moroccan massage. Ian continues his journey to the village of Tamtachoute in the High Altas Mountains, where he's invited to stay the night with a local family - to a Moroccan a guest is a gift from Allah, and he's made to feel very welcome. Next day he witnesses Aid El Kabir, one of the Islamic world's oldest and most important religious festivals celebrating the time when Abraham was asked by God to slaughter his son, Isaac. Every family that can afford to buys a sheep and slaughters it at home. Ian hires a motorbike and heads down the Dades Valley to Zagora, following the route of a thousand Kasbahs, an ancient caravan trail that runs out to the desert. He embarks on a two day camel trek form the village of Tinfou, but unfortunately ...

The 'eid Sacrifice [06:25]
Sacrificing the hoale sheep for 'eid al Kabir, the big sacrifice. I helped in a small way in the purchase of this haole. It is facing qibla (Mecca), and the ritual butcher says "bism'illah" (in the name of God), while offering a prayer for select family members, as he cuts it. He is Muslim, so it is halal (kosher). I asked why the sprinkling of salt on its neck. I was told it is merely tradition. And this is not considered a propitiatory sacrifice. It is only in remembrance of Abraham's (unnamed) son. It is not as painless as I've been lead to believe. The haole takes a good four minutes to die, drowning it its own blood. It is however a good deal less messy than working with fish, with their slime. This video is not for the faint of heart. If you do not want to see animals in pain, you should not watch this.

The Crying of the Lambs.AVI [00:30]
Every year in the Muslim world, there is the Great Feast of Sacrifice, 'Eid al Kabir or 'Eid al Adha. In Morocco, there is great social pressure for every family to get a sheep, even if it means sacrificing eating meat for the entire rest of the year. One must keep up with the Mohammeds. The sacrifice commemorates the almost sacrifice of Abraham's son, believed to be Ishmael according to Hadith, though never stated in the Qur'an. God miraculously provided a substitutionary atonement of a lamb. At the end of Hajj, all Hajjis in Mecca sacrifice a sheep at the spot where it is believed that Ibrahim did the same, and all Muslims around the world celebrate with them. Here, if you listen very closely from the barrier walls above Shoofshowen, Morocco, the sheep cry out minutes before the slaughter is to begin. Do they know what is about to happen?
