Goats in argan tree. [00:30]
Morocco. Traveling from Imlil to Taroudant. The tree the goats are in is an evergreen argan tree. It is found mostly only in Morocco. The tree reaches heights of 25-30 feet, and has a knobby, twisted trunk that allows for goat climbers. The goats climb the tree because they like to eat the fruit of the tree, which is similar to an olive. Which is all well and good. Goats in trees. Perfectly natural. Farmers actually follow the herds of goats as they move from tree to tree. Not because it is so strange to see goats in trees and the farmers like to point and stare, but because the fruit of the tree has a nut inside, which the goats can't digest, so they spit it up or excrete it which the farmers collect. The nut contains 1-3 kernels, which can be ground to make argan oil used in cooking and cosmetics. This oil has been collected by the people of the region for hundreds of years, but like many wild and useful things these days, the argan tree is slowly disappearing due to over-harvesting for the tree's wood and overgrazing by goats. As a result a group of people and organizations have banded together to try to save the tree. To do so one of the primary locations where the trees grow has been declared a biosphere preserve. It was also decided that by making the world aware of the oil, it's great taste and supposed anti-aging properties, would create a demand for it. However, the people who planned to market the oil could not envision people wanting to put an oil on their food ...

Saffron: Morocco's mystic spice [02:02]
The small town of Taliouine in southern Morocco is home to the country's largest saffron fields. In many countries saffron is revered as a mystical spice with religious connotations. Despite being known as one of the world's most expensive spices, farmers earn only a small profit from huge sales around the world. The production of one single kilogram of saffron comes from 150000 flowers. The delicate task for separating the stamen from the flower is predominantly done by women. Depending on the quality and quantity of saffron one gram can cost on average US$6.28. For centuries saffron has been cultivated in the region and valued for its rich flavor as well as healing qualities. The yellow spice is also used as a coloring agent to enhance fabric and food. Unique purple flowers cover the southern Moroccan fields which produce the stamens from where saffron is derived. Efforts are being made in Taliouine to ensure farmers get their fair share of the proceeds for cultivating the spice. Moroccan authorities are encouraging farmers to plant further saffron crocus flowers to increase the local economy through escalating exports which will bring extra profit back into the North African country. The local branch of the Department of Agriculture created the initiative to offer support to thousands of farmers. Free seeds, water and advice were provided to help farmers produce more. Ishmael El-Hamdi said the saffron grown in this area is highly rated because the soil and climate ...

Selling me to the highest bidder [00:56]
I never realized I was so marketable in Morocco. Finding clients was not so difficult but the exchange was awkward more in the style of the Moroccans themselves it was 'barter business' If it had not been so difficult to ship these animals and to start farming them then I am sure I would now be living in a Marrakesh Palace and my husband ( ex) would be in the camel steak business. It was not to be.....well not yet!

Morocco : Under the Spell of Horses . [04:34]
The film is part of the series "Under the Spell of Horses". It contains spectacular images from one of these Fantasias and documents the life of a Berber family. The Slimani family has two horses: a workhorse and a high-class Fantasia stallion. It is the family's pride and joy. Most farmers can only afford one riding horse, if at all. In a country as dry as Morocco green fodder is expensive — indeed, it takes as much to keep one horse as it does to keep a whole family. But the horse is still considered part of the family by the Slimanis. Director Lisa Eder and her team accompany Lachsen Slimani as he makes his way through the mountainous terrain of the Middle Atlas to the outskirts of the desert. It is the only way Lachsen will be able to make his and his son's dream come true, of riding together at a fantasia in the royal city of Meknes...
