Morocco. Traveling from Imlil to Taroudant. The tree the goats are in is an evergreen argan tree. It is found mostly only in Morocco. The tree reaches heights of 25-30 feet, and has a knobby, twisted trunk that allows for goat climbers. The goats climb the tree because they like to eat the fruit of the tree, which is similar to an olive. Which is all well and good. Goats in trees. Perfectly natural. Farmers actually follow the herds of goats as they move from tree to tree. Not because it is so strange to see goats in trees and the farmers like to point and stare, but because the fruit of the tree has a nut inside, which the goats can't digest, so they spit it up or excrete it which the farmers collect. The nut contains 1-3 kernels, which can be ground to make argan oil used in cooking and cosmetics. This oil has been collected by the people of the region for hundreds of years, but like many wild and useful things these days, the argan tree is slowly disappearing due to over-harvesting for the tree's wood and overgrazing by goats. As a result a group of people and organizations have banded together to try to save the tree. To do so one of the primary locations where the trees grow has been declared a biosphere preserve. It was also decided that by making the world aware of the oil, it's great taste and supposed anti-aging properties, would create a demand for it. Lasciamo Telouet e percorriamo la Strada P1506 che passa tra i monti. La strada si inerpica tra le montagne costeggiando dall'alto i vari villaggi di terra e paglia che si perdono tra il verde dei palmeti e il rosso dell'arsura. Arriviamo ad Ait Ben Haddou.prima del tramonto e incontriamo un ragazzo, Noraddì, che ci mostra il Ksar, il vecchio villaggio. Ci dice che hanno girato vari film tra cui Il Gladiatore, Il Principe di Persia, Hidalgo, La Mummia,.. e tanti altri che avevano come scenario il deserto e abitazioni arabe. Giungiamo, poi, a Ouarzazate, ritronando sulla strada, prima che cali la notte. AIT BEN HADDOU: Si trova sul fianco di una collina lungo il fiume Ouarzazate ed è nata come città fortificata, o Ksar, lungo la rotta carovaniera tra il deserto del Sahara e l'attuale città di Marrakech. Il Ksar è protetto dall'UNESCO come Patrimonio dell'Umanità. Il paese moderno si è sviluppato fuori dallo Ksar, e oramai solo poche persone abitano l'antico abitato. Sia il Ksar, villaggio fortificato caratteristico dell'architettura berbera, che le case sono costruite in pisé (impasto di terra cruda e paglia). La metà inferiore delle mura difensive è di terra , mentre la parte superiore è in mattoni e presenta caratteristiche decorazioni di fango. Le torri si assottigliano dal basso verso l'alto .
