upload.wikimedia.org يقع هذا المضيق البحري بين شبه جزيرة إيبيريا من شمال والساحل الإفريقي من جنوب، ويصل بين مياه البحر الأبيض المتوسط ومياه المحيط الأطلسي. يسمى أبضاً هذا المضيق ببحر الزُّقاق. وعلى شواطئ المضيق تقع كل من المغرب واسبانيا ومنطقة الحكم الذاتي جبل الطارق البريطانية. سمي بذلك لأن القائد طارق بن زياد قد عبره في بداية الغزوات الإسلامية لاسبانيا عام 711 م، وقد تصحف لفظ الاسم في اللغات الأوروبية حيث يسمى ب"جبرلطار" بالإنكليزية أو "خبرالطار" بالإسبانية. يبلغ عمق المياه فيه حوالي 300 متر، وأقل مسافة بين ضفتيه هي 14 كيلومتر. ويعتبر من أهم المعابر البحرية في العالم. وسمي قديما بأعمدة هرقل حيث يروى أنه كانت تقع خلفه قارة أطلانطس الخيالية. The Strait of Gibraltar (Arabic: مضيق جبل طارق, Spanish: Estrecho de Gibraltar) is a narrow strait that connects the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea and separates Spain in Europe from Morocco in Africa. The name comes from Gibraltar, which in turn originates from the Arabic Jebel Tariq (meaning "Tariq's mountain), albeit the Arab name for the Strait is Bab el-Zakat or "Gate of Charity". It is also known erroneously as the Straits of Gibraltar, or STROG (Strait Of Gibraltar), in naval use[2] and as "Pillars of Hercules" (Greek: Ηράκλειες Στήλες)[3] in the ancient world. Europe and Africa are separated by 7.7 nmi (14.3 km; 8.9 mi) of ocean at the strait's narrowest point.
