Hadra Chefchaouni performance at the Prince Bandar Library
The Hadra Chefchaounia is an all-women singing ensemble from Chefchaouen, a small town located on the foothills of the Rif mountain range in northern Morocco, renowned for being a rich and diversified cultural and poetic centre, but best known for its Hadra tradition. "Hadra", from the word "hodoor" in Arabic, which means "presence", is originally a ritual observed in the context of Sufi congregations and fraternities. It involves invocations, chants of praise and prayers that crescendo to a state of "ecstasy" that is considered to be the fruit of unison with the divine presence.
