I know this was discussed before but my question is more specific.

For a COUPLE travelling to Morocco (no family , kids etc) is it better to travel by plane or drive/ferry. I have never done the road trip. My hubby did it years ago with his mates before we were married and says he had a great time?!

This year we are planning visit Maroc in September. Air tickets will cost around £400 return for the both of us (which I think is not bad at all). I think that is cheaper than the drive/ferry route will cost!

But my hubby wants to go by car, says it will be an “adventure”. The word “adventure” scares me He reckons it will be fun as I have never done the road trip before and we can stay in a hotel in Spain along the way. Also, we need a car in Maroc (but we could fly and hire one there anyway).

Any thoughts? Could the road trip actually be fun ? A once in a lifetime experience? Or should we just stick to the known route and travel by plane?

Thanks!

I have a property in Morocco in Essaouira ( http://www.moroccovilla.co.uk ) and drive down quite often from UK . I also fly into Marrakech and also Agadir . The drive is absolutely fine - just a bit of a bore . I take a calais crossing in the morning and "do" france in one day - down the West coast and usually stop either on the French side or Spanish side around Irun. The following day is a full day driving straight across the middle of Spain through Madrid and down to Algeciras or Tarifa. From memory the complete tolls are about £120.00 for spain & France . I normally stay about Malaga for night two . The third day take early ferry to Tanger and spend the usual hour or so clearing customs - dont forget to buy compulsory car insurance . This is at a "shed" on the right after customs ( about 800dhs per month) . The trip then to the south is SUPER - great roads ( autoroute to Casa - tolls Very cheap) then good roads all the way !
DO watch radar speed traps in Morocco which are outside most towns - the fines can mount up - Otherwise driving in Morocco is stress free and relaxed . Remember that Fuel costs get cheaper as you go further south ( in Descending order Britain , France , spain , morocco ) so try to arrive in France near empty , Spain Near empty and Maroc near empty!

In summary - two Solid days driving to algeciras - but an easy drive ! Hope this helps
