Najat I take your point about learning topics like evolution etc. I was taught that also, but the problem I see is not so much Moroccans refusing to go to school or college because they don’t like a particular aspect of the school curriculum the problem is more profound, the general attitude amongst a significant number of Moroccans when it comes to education is one of ignorance and a total lack of appreciation of what education is all about. Education isn’t simply about getting a good job but it’s important for personal development spiritually as well as intellectually. Now that could be due to parental influence, if parents don’t instill their kids with an enthusiasm for learning then the kid is at an immediate disadvantage when compared to his/her peers, some kids of course are strong minded enough to break from this cycle of ignorance but many others don’t.
Some of the things Moroccans can do is: Try to participate in the running of local schools, e.g. joining the board of school governors. Setup community centers, where kids can get help with home work etc. The local Mosque can be an ideal place for this, so as well as traditional Islamic education kids are also taught school national curriculum subjects. As a parent take your kids to the local library at a young age. Many libraries run schemes designed to attract young kids, reading clubs etc. Many museums are now free to the public, so there is no excuse for parents not taking their kids there. As a young kid I was the archetypal book worm, I used to read loads of books mainly non fiction, and I can definitely say it benefits you later on in life. Of course some will say that the first generation of Moroccan immigrants to arrive in the UK were not accustomed to the opportunities offered to them, that may be true to an extant, but what is certainly true now is it that the current generation of Moroccans can’t use that excuse any longer. Iqra is the first word of the Quran to be revealed to the Prophet (PBUH). Surely the importance of this cannot be understated. |
