Pat Robertson in a moment of irritation and anger against Chavez said the thing for which he later apologized.
Hugo Chavez has been openly insulting Bush and lashing out against America. Also he is critical of Democracy and believe in some sort of socialism. Intending to irritate America further, Chavez praises Fidel Castro and thinks American influence is not good for South America. It is natural for some poorer countries to both envy and be angry at richer nations, such as America flaunting its wealth and dominating the world's affairs. In this, Mahathir Mohamed (ex-Prime Minister of Malaysia) and Hugo Chavez has something in common. Mr. Chavez has been openly accusing America of trying to pull him down, or even assassinate him. Under this pretext, Chavez has been buying plenty of weapons and refining armed guards around himself. So in this context, in essence, what Robertson said was that if Chavez really thinks America is trying to assassinate him, why not let him have it then. Little Venice (Venezuela) is the fifth largest oil supplier to American market. Venezuela needs American dollars, and America needs Venezuelan oil. So even if Chavez keep throwing tantrums and rolling on the floor like a little kid to irritate his parents, things will simply remain a heated rhetoric: mostly Chavez continuing to insult America. He is an angry man, and he is angry at America. Just leave him alone. And thanks to Pat for stirring the pot and then dousing the flame under it.

Communism isn't any more acceptable to the US Government (and I daresay, the American people) than it was 50 years ago. It simply won't be tolerated in this hemisphere. Cuba is a special case because of the cold war. Call it what you like but that's just the way it is.

That's very true, they'll probably invade by next friday... although quite how land reform and industrial nationalisations in Venuzuela are incitement to assassianation and invasion by the US, is beyond me. V

Unfortunately Pat is more than just a freak. He is a dangerous freak who can get away with murder. He is one of the largest contributors to Bushes campaign, he's a rolemodel for the Neocons. Now Theja, you need to get some Latino friends that can introduce you to reality. I mean, Cali is full of them. So it won't be that difficult to get acquainted with one or two. They will tell you what life became when all of a sudden the Americans had to interfere. The fact is and remains that the great US of A has made some bigmistakes in the past, especially in South America. They turned countries such as Chile, Argentina and Uruguay in the hands of brutal dictators, for the only reason that the public chose for a more socialist government. Governments that had been chosen fairly: DEMOCRATICLY! Chavez is chosen by the majority of the citizens. He has more support than he has oppononents. And why can he not say something about Bush, when Robertson (who is Bush's mental spindoctor) can vent all the crap that comes out his mouth? So what if Pat would have been Mohamed instead? He would have been labeled as an Al Qaeda leading figure and would have been sent to Cuba (Guantanamo Bay for that matter) |
