the "other side" of Islam in relation with Jews and Israel. This is the kind of stuff we hardly see on mainstream media.

Taken from the Jpost:
'Fatwa' over road carnage issued
By DAVID RUDGE

Sheikh Abdallah Nimr Darweesh, founder and spiritual head of the Islamic Movement in Israel, is issuing a fatwa (religious edict) on Thursday in an effort to help reduce the carnage on the roads.

Darweesh told The Jerusalem Post that he had already written the edict that he intended to officially announce and that it would concentrate on encouraging motorists to abide by the law.

"As a person who seeks peace between nations and who rejects war, I see that we are being afflicted by another kind of war – the carnage on the roads," he told the Post. "It is a war that has been imposed on us and we cannot sit by quietly and do nothing. We have to try and fight against it in order to help preserve life."

Darweesh is recognized as a leading Islamic cleric not only by Muslims in Israel but also among the Palestinians and throughout the region.

He stressed that numbers of those killed and injured on the roads were constantly growing and that this applied to all people throughout the region and not just Arabs or Jews in Israel.

"I see the news in Arabic from Lebanon, Syria, Egypt and other countries and I see that the carnage on the roads is a major problem in the region generally," said Darweesh.

"It is not just a question of the need to improve road infrastructure. It's also an issue of driving habits. There are many traffic offenders and we, as religious leaders, need to make our voices heard.

"In the same way that it is forbidden to desecrate holy sites, the desecration of human beings is also forbidden."

Darweesh said Islamic religious law placed a great deal of emphasis on the need to respect human life and as such those who committed traffic offences were in effect breaking religious law.

"The fatwa I have written states that anyone who deliberately breaks traffic laws or causes someone else to do so is breaking Islamic religious law because that law encourages and supports everything that helps preserve life," he said.

"Abiding by the traffic law means, among many other things, wearing seat belts, obeying road signs and traffic lights and not talking on mobile phones without a diburit. All of these things are to help save lives and some of the wisest sages say that these laws will become part of religious law itself," said Darweesh.

Interesting. Finally, a "fatwa" that actually makes some sense. Good for him.

The observation should be: Finally a fatwa that doesn't ask for the killing or beheading of somebody. Although labeling the disrespect of traffic laws as breaking Islamic laws is somewhat dangerous and can include heavy consequences for a mere traffic violation.

Can you Imagine?

A "Notice" printed at the bottom of an Islamic traffic citation:

Signing this citation is not an admission of guilt. However, when you are found guilty, you will be beheaded. If you refuse to sign this citation, your driving privaleges will be revoked and you will be beheaded.
