During the early part of the Iraq war, the major news networks sent their reporters among the army to record and report upto-the-minute happenings, thanks to modern technology. They were termed embedded journalists.

During another war involving Iraq, this time known as Babylon, God had embedded prophets to give us divine perspectives.

North Israel was dissolved for idolatry and wickedness. For another hundred years, the South called Judah has not learnt from the mistake of the North. So God prepared Babylon to punish Judah.

The embedded prophets... Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Daniel.

1. JEREMIAH stayed in Judah to remind the people that God had determined to let Babylon rule over the land, so resistence is useless. For that he was called a traitor and mistreated in many ways. (Not an easy job)

2. EZEKIEL was included among the early exiles to Babylon. From there Ezekiel told the grieving people why God had chosen to punish the people. Also through Ezekiel God would tell the people what He was about to do, or doing in Jerusalem. He showed them by way of symbols the famine, the siege, the escape and capture of Zedekiah whose eyes will be gouged for rebellion, etc,etc,...

3. DANIEL in the White House in the capital of Babylon. Daniel was included among the royal students in Nebuchadnezzar's court, and through supernatural acts he rose to stand before the greatest earthly ruler who ever lived. Through Nebuchadnezzar's dream (Daniel 2)interpreted by Daniel, God showed the subsequent history of the world: After Babylon, will come world rulers in this order: Medo-Persia, Greece, Roman. And during the Roman empire God will establish a kingdom that will grow and encompass the world (Daniel 2:44-45). A rock not made by human hands -- meaning, a divine movement, not manmade religion.

After the Babylonian experience the Jews NEVER went back to idolatry.

In 536 BC the joined forces of Medes (Kurds?) and Persians (Iranians) took over Babylon as prophesied by Jeremiah the duration of Babylon's rule : 70 years. And to prove that the people will return, Jeremiah bought a piece of land and gave the title deed to Baruch for safekeeping. (Daniel was a teenager then in Babylon).

Daniel read the 70 years prophecy of Jeremiah and prayed and fasted accordingly (Daniel 9:1-19). (By now Daniel is a senior citizen -- his reputation was well-known that the Persian kings loved and revered him after they took over Babylon).

606-536= 70 years. Prophecy fulfilled. King Cyrus saw his name in the prophecy of Isaiah (44:28) and showed kindness to the Jews by allowing them to return to Judea.

The return of the exiles is recorded in the book of Ezra. Some Jews remained in Babylon and thrived under Persian rulers -- this is when the story of Esther comes into play (and the name HAMAN emerges).

--------------------------------------

To Belshazzar the regent of Babylon, God used the phrase : "your days are numbered..." (and his kingdom was taken away shortly thereafter). (Daniel 5:26).

The same phrase was uttered in the prophecy for Arafat -- "your days are numbered..." (and he passed away one year later).

The God of history is from everlasting to everlasting (Psalm 90:1). He is the same as He was in the beginning of human history. He Himself declared that He does not change.
