Prophecy does include a certain foretelling of futur events, usually in the form of : "if you don't do this, such and such will surely happen", a prophet is put to test, according to the Torah, by judging if the thing he has predicted comes true or not. However, the prime function of a prophet seems to be that of a spokesman, not a forecaster, and usually in connection with words of reproof, when people misbehave, God sends his prophets to admonest humanity, so that they may repent. The first time the word is used in the Torah is in connection with Moses and Aaron, God says to Moses, go and speak to Pharaoh, your brother will be your "prophet" (nabiakha), ie, nabi = interpreter/spokesman, and also, this was connected to reproof against Pharoh, Moses warns Pharaoh. This further corroborates the statement about Prophecy's main function.

jer, nice post. I am not an expert in Islamic theology but what you wrote sounds very similar to what we believe in Islam. Of the 99 names we have for the Prophet of Islam (pbuh) one of the name is 'Nazeer' -- 'The Warner'

Main role of Prophet and Priest....

PROPHET : To represent God to men and women. Prophets were sent to forthtell (declare) and even foretell (prophecy) the message of God.

PRIEST : To represent men and women before God. The priests accepted the offerings of people and dedicated them to God. Only the High Priest could enter the Holy of Holies.

this is not an obligation in islam ..but you must be very lucky and aware on how to contact your master and king of kings ALLAH.
therefore i may only agree that few such as the profet and his household and sahabas were able to have such dignity to face the lord ...because the were very close....especialy the household of M. SW "free of sins'
but to us a regular priest or an IMAM
tough without disrespect most of nowadays priest are gays and pedofiles that will be a bad choice !and seeking to get close to your lord need more safer steps..
regards,
