BROKEN SKULL
DUMP TOT'S BROKEN SKULL
By Rod Chaytor
A NEWBORN girl whose body was found inside a carrier bag dumped by a river was beaten to death shortly after her birth.

Yesterday it was revealed the baby, named Lily by police, had suffered several serious injuries, including a fractured skull and collarbone.

A police source said: "We are investigating an infanticide."

And Det Chief Insp Adrian Pearson, of Warwickshire Police, told a press conference: "We believe that she died soon after birth, but that she didn't sustain those injuries in the course of birth or in pregnancy. They were inflicted on her soon after she was born."

She was newly born, had her umbilical cord attached and had not been fed.

He said: "Baby Lily has a family, she has a mum, a dad, grandparents. We need to know her background and how she came to lose her life in such tragic circumstances." He added: "She had not been cared for at all."

A family taking a stroll along the river at Aston Cantlow, Warwicks, made the grisly find on May 11. Children with the group thought it was a bag of rubbish until one knocked it into the water and they saw the baby's head. Divers recovered the bag and contents four hours later.

Four bloodstained tea towels, a dish cloth, women's pyjama bottoms, knickers and black socks were also in the Tesco carrier bag, which was inside a Mothercare bag.

Mr Pearson said: "Mum has left us a big bag of clues. I am certain people will put these together and identify Lily for us."

The pyjamas were size 12-14 and sold by Bhs in 2002. Police want to find whoever owns the matching top. A woman's belly button ring with a turquoise stone was also found nearby.

One theory is that the mother was in an abusive relationship and too afraid to come forward but left clues to trace her.

Police - who released an artist's impression of Lily - believe she was dumped at the remote spot, six miles from Stratford, before 7pm on May 10.

The theory they have come up with is quite interesting - I hope they find the mother. If they are right, she seriously needs help, pronto!
