Imams are human, muslims do not regard them as devine or nor should they even hold any special rank or status over the rest of muslims, they have the same access to GOD as everybody else, so your post doesn't hold much when you say a "Man knocks out a 6 year old", still shocking but that's how a muslim sees it, An Imam is just a Man, not quite the same when you say a priest .

First of all, what I'm saying is this is a horrible deed, and it happens all too readily sadly, child abuse is very common, but the fact we are even talking about it, means that this is a special case, why?, cos the perp is an Imam, what I'm saying is Imams are just Human, and can be good and bad.., rather than say Imam say Man..

Human Nature, we all know Imams are prayer leaders no more no less, it will be chaos in a mosque if ppl didn't have someone to follow in prayer, an Imam is not devine nor they have special knowledge that the rest of muslims don't have access to, nor do they need to preach, they are not especially pious or closer to GOD than anybody else, anyone in the mosque can lead in prayer, men or women, mosques like in the prophet's day were mixed and anyone could lead in prayer.
We have now professional Imams, they make a living out of leading prayer out of several mosques, they make a living out of Marrying people, etc..
And most of what you see happening is cultural rather than religious..

Everyone should get a chance to lead in prayer, we shouldn't pay people to be imams, we in the community should take turns and lead eachother in prayer, we shouldn't let one man hog the front line.. the whole system needs reforms..
