School wins Muslim dress appeal

Personally, I agree with the ruling. If you know the rules (which apply to everyone at the school), you don't join the school & then seek to dictate changes to suit your own views on Islamic dress code. |

I'm in two minds, although for different reasons. The girl in this case was (as I understand it) primed by Hizb-Ut-Tahrir, and therefore took the case about the jilbab forward when most of the local Muslim community were happy with the status quo - which did allow her and her fellow pupils to wear shalwaar kameez and head scarves. That sort of stirring by the Hizb and exploitation of a young person is obviously quite bad.
However, on the other hand I'm not too happy with the idea of school uniforms in general, which makes me think this could have set a useful precedent. V

I trust the Lords. they are fair and I am sure they have made a correct decision.
Islam does give people the right to even claim they disbelieve in God and even eat PORK and drink Alcohol if one has no other way but to survive. I still do not agree with the school. I don't want to Judge the school before finding out what they have done to keep the rights of individuals intact. I am also half half because the girl knew that the school was not catering for muslims so surely she can go somewhere else. Finally Some people claim they are muslims but when it comes to practice they are worst than non muslims because having a membership alive and not using it is a waste of time. I am talking about 5 pillars of Islam as basic obligations |

T,
If I remember rightly the school set the policy in consultation with the local Muslim community, which seems to me entirely reasonable. H-T used Shabina to challenge the policy because they didn't think it was authentic enough, from their perspective. But surely there has to come a point where people aren't assumed to be "authentic" just because they're conservative? Remember, the school absolutely DID allow female students to wear the hijab. V

You know, I find there is a particular brand of snobbery with conservative Muslims. And an underlying aggression. Either jump in line, follow their drums or they throw you out. Not just the men, but also the women. For example, you get sisters come up to you at the mosque& tell you that you shouldn't wear a colourful hijab & that you MUST wear a jilbab. God forbid that you should wear some blusher or mascara. Then you get a lecture about 'if you are going to wear hijab, wear it in xyz way'. Then there are the lectures about working; i.e you shouldn't.
I cannot tolerate it; even when it is seemingly well-intentioned. |
