As I understand it from the people I know, its......
Because in the late 60s/early 70s, contracts were being offered to come and work in the UK. Immigration really wasn't what it is today & skilled workers largely stayed put in Morocco. It was predominantly low skilled workers emigrating at that time or people with political or other problems.
Large numbers of people from the surrounding villages (Khemis Sahel, Bni Aross, Bni Gorfat) of Larache signed up and brought their families over. People brought other people via marriage or whatever. The numbers of new arrivals has slowed down since the introduction of visa controls but people already here still get married to people from Larache. People that are already here are getting married & having kids etc. I tknow some families who are on their fourth generation (they had teenage children when they moved over originally).
They all bought houses in Larache proper & over the years, the small town has grown quite a bit. We used to go there a lot in the 80s & its massive in comparison to how it used to be. I last visited in 2003. I feel the town & the beach have lost their early charm but there you go. Who am I to know.
