Someone's job tells me something of his or her interests more than it tells me their income. (Well, OK, I could extrapolate it out so that it could tell me something about income, too, but that's not all that inportant to me.) I want a man who's smart, which often, but not always comes with more education. I admire people who do things that are "good" even if they don't pay well (teachers, working for nonprofit organizations that I admire, etc.) I also admire people who do things that require a lot of personal pride in the quality of their workmanship, as do many of the "blue collar" professions, even though they may not require a lot of education.
Why someone does what they do tells me more about a person than the exact profession itself, but how can I get to asking that without asking what it is that they do?
I make a lot more than my husband, and have a lot more education than my husband. Do I resent that? Heck no! Do I think less of him because of that? Heck no! His profession has a lot more future potential for profit. (Hopefully that will come to fruition before we have kids so I can stay home with them, but if not, then it will come in God's time-- see, y'all have me almost thinking like a Muslim now!)
