The Polisario Front starts to destroy its
landmine stockpile

Press Release

The Polisario Front starts to destroy its landmine stockpile

Geneva/Tifariti, 1 March 2006 - On 27 February 2006, the Polisario
Front, in compliance with the Geneva Call Deed of Commitment, began the
destruction of its stockpile of anti-personnel mines. The event took place in
Tifariti, Western Sahara, during the celebrations marking the 30th anniversary
of the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic (as recognized by the African Union
and many States).

Polisario top officials attended the destruction ceremony, including
Mohamed Abdelaziz, Polisario Front's Secretary General and President of the
Republic, as well as the Minister of Defence, Mohamed Lamine Bouhali,
in charge of the operation. During the ceremony, the Minister of Defence
underlined that "this initiative reflects the choice of the Saharawi
people for a peaceful settlement of the conflict". He added that the Polisario
Front will complete the destruction of its remaining stockpile and
called on Morocco to reciprocate.

The Geneva Call President Elisabeth Reusse-Decrey congratulated the
Polisario Front for starting to destroy its stockpile only four months
after signing the Deed of Commitment. "This demonstrates the Polisario
attachment to international humanitarian law and, despite the current political
deadlock, its will to respect and implement quickly its commitment" she
said.

A number of foreign governments and international organisations
witnessed the event; among them representatives from MINURSO,
UNMAS, Landmine Monitor, the Saharawi Campaign to Ban Landmines,
Landmine Action UK and Geneva Call.
In total, more than one thousand people attended. The President of the
Association of Mine Survivors, a Polisario commander and the President
of the Saharawi Campaign to Ban Landmines also took the floor.

After the speeches, engineers from the Ministry of Defence proceeded to
destroy 3'321 anti-personnel mines. Prior to the operation, Geneva Call
and the Saharawi Campaign to Ban Landmines had facilitated a mission with
Norwegian People's Aid to assist the Polisario Front in the
preparations and to discuss the relevant international mine action standards.

Geneva Call and the Saharawi Campaign to Ban Landmines congratulate the
Polisario Front for having successfully conducted this first stockpile
destruction. Such an operation demonstrates the importance of engaging
non-State actors in the mine ban and the role that they can play
towards a
mine free world. It is hoped that Morocco will take shortly concrete
measures towards accession to the Ottawa Convention.

you missed one thing. If a terrorist decided to give his weapon to the police do you expect the police to give back his weapon as well?????????
Polisario are terrorists and Morocco is a country that once ruled from Andalusia Spain to Mali in the Golden years. Sahara is Moroccan and has always been so. everyone knows it and everyone knows that Polisario is a bunch of men created by Algeria and backed up by Libya in order to gain access to the Atlantic ocean. All countries gave up their support except Algeria. And who cares what Algerian Government do????? they can't even manage their own problems let alone others. what kind of a government send the Army to put down a new government that was democratically elected??????????

Just because sahara was colonised by spain it does not mean that Morocco has no right to it. so is Melilia and Sebta and I may even go as far as canary islands all Moroccans

ok i dont usually get involved in this political stuff, but your post pissed me off.

!st off im gonna explain something about myself, im algerian, born in london, i have moroccan family, grew up around moroccans and live in ladbroke grove, i been algeria and but ive been morocco even more, and i can tell you whats messed up about both countries
Please dont talk about algeria cleaning its "house", cos morocco needs to do its fair share of house keeping.

Let me tell you 1 thing both algeria and morocco have in comon, they both stink the same, those sewage and rubbish smells are exactly the same.

On the subject of the elections, ill tell you this, GOOD, im gald the army stepped in and ask them now majority will agree, those elections came off the back off a big recession and the islamic party used this to influence the poor and unemployed.
You can be as muslim as you but you cant give support to people who slit womens throats for not wearing hijab, these people were savages returning from fighting in afghanistan with nothing else to do but cause trouble.

I am sorry if I offended you It was not intended, I too have algerian friends. you have confused Algerian with a system that runs them.
I am NOT in favour of what the islamist did (if true allah knows best)in that land it was Haram again like i said some people want power and that is personal gains whic are far from islam. the reason i used that was to remind people that the gov should spend more time in making sure that their people are looked after insteading of waging a stupid war at their neighbours which serves no one except the western countries.
by the way you should never force a religion on anyone so i do not agree with the islamists ideas of force
