Astronomer Meryem Chadid first Moroccan woman to set foot on Antarctica
Rabat, Mar. 02 - Astronomer Meryem Chadid is entitled to boast of being the first Moroccan woman to set foot on Antarctica and having the honour to plant there the north African country flag. Ms Chadid told on Wednesday the Tangier-based Radio Médi 1 she travelled to the south pole to help install a telescope used to measure star twinkling in the Concordia sation "Dome C". She told of her voyage to the station some 1100 km of the French Dumont d'Urville base and 1200 km of the Italian Terra Nova base, and related the harshness of the climate in the ice continent. Concordia helps the scientific community to carry out research and observation works in several fields, French astronomer Jean Vernin said for his part. Vernin is in charge, in cooperation with a Moroccan laboratory, of the French-Moroccan "SIDAR" project, a radar apparatus to measure sky quality to choose the best sports for telescope installation. So far, two sites has been selected to host telescopes, Vernin said. |
