09/02/2006

Morocco's unemployment rate rose to 11.5 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2005, up from the 10.4 per cent recorded in the same period in 2004, according to a High Commissioner for Planning press release. The unemployed active population rose from 1.11m to 1.28m in the same period, 60.7 per cent of whom were registered in rural areas. Both degree-holders (22.9 per cent to 24.3 per cent) and those without degrees (4.2 per cent to five per cent) were affected, the statement said. The same source pointed out that the active population in Morocco aged above 15 reached over 11.21m in the fourth quarter of 2005 against 10.78 million the previous year, a rise of 3.9 per cent. (MAP
