19pc of Spaniards believe Morocco will attack Spain

MADRID — Nineteen per cent of Spaniards are afraid that Morocco may attack their country in 2006, reveal the findings of an opinion poll conducted by Madrid-based Rial Elcano Strategic Studies Institute.

About 68 per cent of the Sapniards believe that the rate of unemployment among Moroccan Muslims in Ceuta and Melilla would end up with Rabat demanding the two cities. The opinion poll focused on foreign policy and covered 1,203 people from the total population of the country with nearly three per cent as the error margin.

Rial Elcano Strategic Studies Institute is related to the government and often conducts studies with the aim of directing the diplomacy of the country.

In a question on the developments which might happen next year, and adversely affect Spain politically, socially and economically, 11 per cent of those who were questioned said the problem of Gibraltar — the disputed entity between Britain and Spain — could be resolved, and 30 per cent believed in the occurrence of a US attack against Iran due to the nuclear issue, which has strongly emerged in international politics in 2005.

Meanwhile, 15 per cent expected the return of tranquility and settlement of the political situation in Iraq. In the strangest answer, 19 per cent said the New Year could see the possibility of Morocco launching a military attack on Spain.

The result sparked wonder and cast doubts on Morocco-Spain relations. Relations between the two states have improved with the signing of several agreements, contrary to what they were during the previous government, when the ties between the two had reached an apparent military confrontation over the Tora Island crisis in the summer of 2002.

What are you doing for New Year's Eve?

Tell us about your favorite things to do on such a night.

I love to party but on New Year's I prefer to avoid traffic and being on the road.

Some of you might like to stay home, make a meal and enjoy a nice bottle of....Perrier,or whatever...
