Bush authorizes start of US-Morocco FTA

Washington, Dec. 23 - President George W. Bush signed on Thursday an order that authorizes the entry into force of the Moroccan-US Free Trade Agreement, signed on 15 June 2004.

The FTA accord eliminates tariffs on 95 percent of all bilateral trade between the United States and Morocco, and includes stringent protections for intellectual property and the environment.

The North African country signed the FTA with the USA after seven rounds of bilateral negotiations that lasted 13 months.

The pact will eliminate most of the tariffs on mutual trade in consumer and industrial products. The remaining tariffs on these goods are mainly agricultural products from both nations, which will be eliminated within the next nine years.

Free trade agreement or not, nothing will change and Morocco will still remain a very poor country. The problem is elsewhere.

I was not defending Algeria and you are right, we are both losers. Some of our problems are lack of good governance, lack of accountability, lack of good education and lack of tolerance towards those with different views.
