Holland Moroccan would-be migrants to pass Dutch culture test for citizenship

Moroccan would-be migrants will need to pass a special test on Dutch language and culture to be granted the country's citizenship, reported BBC news.

Already having a strict migration policy, the Dutch parliament has made this decision to put an end to the so-called “import brides”. It now requires migrants to pass a test, which will cost 350 Euros.

The 250 to 350 hours of study are intended to integrate migrants into the Dutch society, thereby eradicating extremism and radicalism that might result from the marginalisation and exclusion they feel when they are unable to blend into society.

Some 14,000 applicants, mainly from Morocco, are expected to take the test each year.

Migrants will have to take the test in their country of origin. They will be examined at Dutch embassies and consular offices.

“Because integration into Dutch society is a long process, it is important that newcomers have a basic knowledge of Dutch and the Dutch society before coming to the Netherlands,” the Dutch justice ministry said.

Migrants exempted from the test are European Union citizens, nationals of Switzerland, Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand and the United States, and "victims of women trafficking or a witness to the said offence", according to the ministry.
