Salé
More than MAD 130 million to eradicate shanty towns

Morocco TIMES 12/4/2005 | 3:42 pm

A series of housing projects have been launched in the city of Salé (near Rabat), with a budget of MAD 137 million, to eradicate shanty towns in the city.

The first phase of the project, which will benefit 5,405 persons, was inaugurated by Toufik Hjira, Minister Delegate to the Prime Minister in charge of Housing and Urbanism.

The opening phase includes the restructuring of 714 habitations in douar Oulad Bendaoud (Laayayda District), as well as the rehousing of 644 families.

Hjira also launched the project of widening the Mohammed V Street in Tabriquet region.

On the occasion, the minister stressed his ministry's commitment to cooperate with local authorities, elected members of urban councils, and representatives of civil society to stop the spread of poor housing and contribute to the creation of harmonious, well organised cities.

The second phase will include similar projects, benefiting some 540 families.

Tabriquet used to be such a deserted dump in the 90s. I guess the shanty towns aren't in keeping with the regeneration of the area. There are appartment blocks everywhere now & shops etc.

Where are they building the new homes? If its in the sticks, people will have to be thrown out because they won't want to leave areas they've lived in for so long. Don't blame them either
