Magic

Hello

I am a London based writer currently researching my next book which will be all about different superstitions around the world. Morocco is said to be well known for its use of magic however through my research i have only found references to magic music & the Arabian Nights (everyone of the sorcerers was Moroccan).
I would like if possible to find the answers to the following questions:

1 - What percentage of the Moroccan population truly believes in/practices magic?

2 - Which areas in Morocco are best known for their use of magic?

3 - Are there any superstitions regarding charms/practices which can break/prevent spells from being cast on a person?

Also if possible i would like to get in touch with Moroccans (preferably here in London) who either:

1 - Believe they have had a spell of some sort put on them

or

2 - Practice magic themselves

All names supplied will remain confidential.

Thank you for your help.

Interesting paper Sarah-B.

Could you please tell us more about what you are writing for? Maybe it will stem some more answers.

The main focus of my book will be superstitions in different cultures & the reasons behind them. Other regions i'm currently researching include sub-saharan africa, north europe, the far east & latin america. Personally i do not believe in magic or superstitions & think the effects of any spells/hexs cast are purely psychological - the victim believes a spell has been put on them therefore they start believing they have the symptoms associated with that spell or a person believes that because they are wearing a lucky charm no harm can come to them. I would however like the opinions of others & as i said in my previous posting would like to actually speak with people who believe they have had a spell of some sort put on them or practice magic themselves.

There are countless superstitions in Morocco but I tend to only remember them when my mother shouts one at me.

You will find that the majority of Moroccans believe in black magic. We have all heard stories or seen family victims fall victim to it. Marrakech & Agadir are the main places for black magic I believe. Also El Jadida. Most people on these boards are from the North and Central Morocco so probably would be of limited help.

Thankfully I don't know anyone who practices it

Thank you for that Ghazala. You say that you don't know anyone who practices it but do you know anyone who has been affected by it? And do you believe in it yourself?

Well I can reply with stories of 'word of mouth'. There are lots of stories around, the spread of superstition around morocco in regards to BlackMagic is very common.

As Ghazala noted, there are many people from the north on this board, however there are many guests that lurk, hopefully they can help.

Good luck. Very interesting subject. Keep us posted.
