Social mobility (and life expectancy) are actually higher in many W European countries than they are in the USA. GDP is also comparable. Furthermore, I would imagine that the comparison becomes even more flattering to W Europe (especially on GDP) when the tiny hyper-rich minority in the USA are excluded.

You make an interesting point, which especially shows the optimism that many US people have about their prospects of "making it" and joining that hyper-rich group. However, the facts of the case show that expectation usually does not match reality.
