Thumbs up

Good, good, good & about flipping time too!

The Home Secretary has unveiled new measures to rid the country of radical Muslim clerics who could inspire attacks like the London bombings.

Charles Clarke published a list of "unacceptable behaviours" which would prompt immediate action - deportation or a ban on entry.

It follows a period of consultation which started earlier this month.

The type of conduct to be outlawed includes inflammatory preaching and publishing views which foster hatred or foment terrorism.

Mr Clarke said the new powers would be used in a "measured and targeted" way.

"They are not intended to stifle free speech or legitimate debate about religions or other issues," he said.

Earlier this month, the Home Office announced it was detaining 10 people and pledged to deport them.

Among those held was the alleged spiritual leader of al Qaeda in Europe, Jordanian national Abu Qatada.

Clarke: 'I will act'

Hardline Muslim cleric Omar Bakri Mohammed, who fled to Lebanon after the botched July 21 bombings, has already been barred from returning to Britain.

He caused an uproar when he said he would not inform police if he knew Muslims were planning an attack in the UK.

The Government is seeking more agreements like the one recently struck with Jordan which allows any of its nationals seen as a threat to be deported.

It says the deal protects deportees from ill-treatment but human rights campaigners say such guarantees will be worthless in many cases.

Tony Blair has said he will override human rights laws if necessary to deport foreign nationals.

Dissident Mohammed al Massari, who runs a website depicting beheadings and suicide bombings in Iraq, could be one of the first victims of the crackdown.

The European Commission has said websites like his encourage and motivate people to become terrorists.
