I am just a messenger who provided the links from the BBC website. I don't claim that the information is 100% correct because Algeria does not export just oil and gas. We also export dates, different types of wines (have you heard of the Algerian red?), grapes and so on. In terms of agricultural produce, it won't be long before we are up there again.

I know Algeria exports a lot of dates. But the ones I've seen at the supermarkets in the US are mostly from Tunesia(nasty ones!!!) or Iran. Most likely your dates go to Europe and the Middle East.

As for the development of agriculture in Algeria, I truly hope your country will cross that bridge soon. It would be good for the whole area, not just Algeria.
