I can't see how they'll help combat terrorism unless they're compulsary. The anti-terrorist line is used to sell us all sorts of crap from invading Iraq to ID cards.
However, we need something to stop benefit fraud, and there are a few other advantages. In the future there will be so many people in the UK that we will need an alectronic central people database to track everything, better to implement it now than rush it later. As we all know, it takes the government about 6-10 years of mistakes and c*ck-ups to get any IT-based system working properly so I guess they think "we need it in about 10 years, so we better start now" |
