Just kidding Sabra. Like G said, it is a huge field. If someone in London is experiencing mental illness contact the NHS or your GP, or even Social Services at ur local council.
I think seriously , that every human being has the capacity to be mentally ill at some point. There is alot of help out there, and seeking help should not be a shame. |

I am not sure whether you are living in the UK, but I can reliably inform you that it is a lot more common here than people think. 1 in 4 people that visit there GP in the UK do so in relation to their mental health, and it is second only to heart disease as one of the illness that significantly affects citizens of this country. I am afraid im not aware of what the situation is in morocco but I believe that many of the principles that follow also apply there. You see the problem with people seeking help are because of both those you listed, stigma and lack of understanding. Both factors that can be put right with a little time and education. With regards to the different types of mental illness there is a multitude! It ranges from anxiety and depression to schizophrenia and bi-polar disorder and many more in between. All of which vary in the degree of their severity. It is wrong to suggest that every person with a mental illness needs to be locked up, if so there would be very few people walking freely! It depends on the nature of the person’s illness and their situation. If they are not a danger to themselves or society then it is unnecessary as their are a many different types of medication or psychological therapies, all which are proven successful interventions. It is just a case of making the first step to get the help that is needed. Has anyone in morocco tried to seek help on your sister in laws behalf?

Morocco is not the UK. Some things will never change back home. There is enough stigma in the UK despite a wealth of groups, information & projects - it is a million times worse in lbled. Outside the posh clinics (who can afford to see a specialist psychiatrist or psychologist?), treatment will be either the 'asylum' type (lock up & dose up) or 'traditional' type of taking someone to a Fkii or to zor a Seyed. There are still some places where people are tied to trees because they are 'houmak'. Had I not seen this poor girl with my own eyes (ok it was a good decade ago) I would not believe that a mentally ill person could be sent for such 'treatment'. It's easier to say someone is 'maskoun' rather than they have mental health issues. Or just send them away to wherever so they don't show you up in the local area.
