Arranged marriages are forbidden in Islam! Because marriage is such a major thing that we have to do what we can to make sure we found the right person to share our lives with...

To have an arranged marriage is not haram, but being forced into a marriage is.

I have quite a few Muslim friends and their acquaintances who have had an arranged marriage.

You're right, among many communities (particularly asian muslim ones) arranged marriages are commonplace, and the thought of finding your own partner is unheard of! But in Islam, it's not permissible to marry a couple against their will. Of course there's nothing wrong with introducing people to each other, but they shouldn't be forced into the marriage, which often happens

~ pancit ~

You're father helping you to marry and find a suitable life ~ partner is an important parental responsibility to help search, recommend and select a suitable person for marriage, after which YOU have an independent right to marry or not marry the selected person.

You also have the right to look at and speak to {within limits} the suitor in order to determine whether he is the right person for you or otherwise.

Hope that's clear.
