Tsunamis occur in Japan more than any other country in the world. That's the reason why Japanese people avoid living near the coast. Japan also has the best warning system when it comes to tsunamis.

Tsunamis are oceanic tidal waves caused by a submarine earthquake or volcanic eruption. In Japan, as soon as a submarine earthquate occurs, they warn the people living near the coast to seek refuge in higher ground. And since it takes some time for the tsunamis to get to the shore, peoples' lives are spared.

In Japanese, tsunami is actually two words:

Tsu = harbor
name = wave.

Great info guys. I didn't know the word Tsunami had a Japanese origin. Anyway, I heard that more than 200000 people have died so far because of this wave.

Contrary to popular conception there were around 3 waves, the 2nd and 3rd being the most aggressive.
