I do give presents to my friends for Christmas, as they give me presents for Eid. I guess its ok to respect other religions, as long as we dont observe any religious aspects of it. In any event, Chrismas is becoming more & more of a consumer festival than anything else.

I agree tihad, the amount of debt people incur just to get through christmas is incredible. It is so commercialised that sadly the true nature of the celebration is 2nd in line.
How many christians actually go to the church or worship in their own homes over the festival period?? I know that it certainly doesnt apply to all but the majority only talk about the fact its a party season with little recourse to the fact its a time of remberance and worship.
Subhanallah

Nadia, i work in a hospital on research project. How is Uni going?

Sista

Mabrouk on graduating, by the way I take it it's in the medical field then? I left uni; wasn't happy with my degree and lost my apparent burning ambition to become a teacher Right now I'm like you, weighing up my options and seeing what I'd like to do...may return to study, but not too sure. Looking for a job at the moment but no joy so far...

Thanks hun, sort of medical, it was in psychology At the moment i want to do something in healthcare, using psychology so i'll wait and see what comes my way.

I thought you really enjoyed your degree, you were doing so well. But on the same note i think its a good idea that you stopped and took stock of what you were doing and where you wanted to go. Thats so important because you dont want to be trapped doing something you dislike, its the next 40 years of your life so make sure its something you'll have a great time doing

Good luck sis and you never know whats around the corner

I don't think there is anything wrong with participating in xmas. By that i mean writing card and wishing people a merry xmas. I always write cards for my non-muslim friends and so on. They always remember to wish me a happy eid and respect all the religious things i perform and even try to help me along the way so i ofcourse respect their religious occasions aswell.
As for not going to church, well there are many muslims who don't go to the jemmah on eid or any other day for that matter so we are not that different.
Personally i like xmas, people are happier and there is the possibility of snow and ofcourse there are some damn good films on tv!

mind you i find the whole idea of santa a bit creepy! a dirty old man putting kids on his lap and asking if they have been naughty!
yikes!

Salam hbiba

i used to believe it's ok and i was wrong
according to the scholar he said when Allah(SWT) forbids something its usually for a reason let me explain.
Xmas is about celebrating christianity which says that Jesus(pbuh) is either God or son of God. in islam that is shirk so writting someone card is testifying that you agree to it ie agreeing that God has partners. he gave another example: it's the same as seing someone having boyfriend or girlfriend ie sleeping together and writing them a card saying wish you happiness in other words you agree to a haram relation.
