![]() 4/20/2005 Paris--- Moroccan popular band, "Bnet Marrakech" will give a concert May 25 in Paris as part of the fourth edition of "Femmes du Monde" festival. "Bnet Marrakech" is a five-woman band that has given itself a simple name: they are the Bnet (girls of) Marrakech. They've borrowed this word out of the sung dialect of their region. ![]() {{ I wonder why they call themselves "bnets" ? when they're clearly "cherfats" }} With a violin, percussion instruments and crotles (enormous metal castanets specific to Gnawa music), "Bnet Marrakech" creates furious, pulsating rhythm as backing to their songs taken from a large variety of styles from all over Morocco. They sing and dance to the rhythm of the Moroccan traditional music of the Houara (region between Taroudant and Tiznit), of the Hammada (plain of the Dra'a), joined with Amazigh dances and urban repertoires like the`Aita (female seductive appeal) and the Cha`abi, popular style that originated the Rai music. Their music portraits women's daily lives and conditions, above and beyond stereotypes, with emotion, humour and energy. Thirteen female musical bands from various countries will take part in the “Femmes du Monde” festival slated for May 3-27.
