Pope Blesses Photo Of Missing Toddler Madeleine McCann, Parents Continue Search

June 1, 2007 6:39 a.m. EST

Sally Grover - AHN News Writer
Vatican City, Italy (AHN) - Madeleine McCann has received the holiest of blessings for her safe return.

Pop Benedict XVI blessed a photograph of the missing four-year-old after his weekly service at Vatican City. Madeleine's parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, flew to Rome to be part of the pope's general assembly and then meet the Holy Father.

During the 30-second conversation between the grieving parents and Pope Benedict, they passed on a picture of the toddler, which was then blessed by his holiness.

During a press conference following the meeting, the McCann's, both devout Catholics, said the experience gave them strength to continue their Europe-wide search for Madeleine.

Mr McCann said, "It was more personal than I could ever imagine it could have been. There was recognition immediately, looking at Madeleine's photograph. His touch, words and thoughts were more tender than we could have thought."

The couple and police have been searching for four weeks, looking for the little girl who mysteriously went missing from a Portuguese hotel room.

Mr McCann added, "We're still in the middle of a race and we do not know how long it is going to be. I do not know how we will have changed, but I think it is fair to say we will never be the same again."

Mrs McCann, a GP who sobbed beside her husband during the pope's address, added, "It was very emotional, but it was a very positive experience really; it has been very helpful to us...He was very kind, he said he would pray for us and our family and continue to have faith for us. In other circumstances, of course, it would be the highlight for any Catholic to meet the Pope. It is tainted with the very marked realization that our daughter is still missing."

The McCann's, who have two younger children, will continue their search for Madeleine and will tour Europe to raise awareness about her disappearance.
