The bimestrial French magazine ‘Paris Match du Monde' has released a historic picture of the Moroccan Royal Family in a special edition dedicated to Morocco on the occasion of the country's 50th anniversary of Independence.

The French magazine said that the picture of this unique gathering of the Royal Family in Dar Essalam Royal Palace, which shows three generations of the Royal Family, has never been taken before in Morocco's history.

King Mohammed VI and his family belong to the Alaouite dynasty, descended from the prophet Mohamed that started to rule Morocco in the 17th century. They had arrived from Arabia some three centuries earlier to settle near Rissani in the Tafilalet region in the south (They are referred to as Filali).

Unlike preceding dynasties, the Alaouites did not move and seize power but were formally invited by the people of Fez to come to the capital and take over the throne of Morocco.

Paris Match's special edition included a retrospective on the major events that led to the independence of Morocco, along with 50 photos. It also included a feature on the Equity and Reconciliation committee, a body set up in 2004 to seek the settlement of past human rights abuses in Morocco.
