Child Mortality Increases to 40 Per Thousand in Morocco
![]() The Moroccan child mortality rate increased from 36.6 per thousand in 1997 to 40 per thousand in 2004, reports French-language daily L'économiste. The newspaper also reported the fertility rate decreased from 3.1 per thousand to 2.5 per thousand over the same period, while the infant mortality rate jumped from 45.8 per thousand to 47 per thousand. The alarming statistics are likely the result of a reduction in UNICEF-funded awareness raising campaigns on television and radio. The figures could also be linked to a lack of human resources, especially in rural areas, and an insufficient health budget. On the positive side, the rate of women losing their lives when giving birth decreased from 332 per 100,000 in 1992 to 227 per 10,000 in 2003. (Morocco Times)

I think this may have been a part of a study which was commissioned in 2003 by the health ministry.
The data shows that 227 cases of prenatal and maternal mortality per 100,000 birth were recorded that year. In practical terms, this means that 1,500 women die in Morocco each year before or during the process of giving birth. That corresponds to four deaths per day. The causes of deaths cited are: 46% are caused by hemorrhages and bleeding, 15% are caused by infections and 12% by complications involving hypertension. Neonatal mortality represents 19 per thousand births, while post neonatal death mortality rate is 16.9 per thousand. Just to expand
