HM King Mohammed VI launched yesterday in Imassine (commune of Ouarzazate) several development projects that will benefit the inhabitants of the region
The Sovereign launched the works of the programme 2005 that will supply 28 small villages (22,000 inhabitants) with drinking water, at the cost of MAD 21 million (US$2.47 million). This programme will supply 87 % of the province of Ouarzazate with drinking water. Besides, HM the king was given explanations on the biodiversity preservation project that provides for transhumance in the southern slope of the High Atlas. Some 200,000 inhabitants will benefit from this project, which is designed to protect biodiversity and integrate it in strategic planning. The project will be implemented on a 700,000 Ha area and will cost MAD 97 million (about US$11.4 million). In addition, HM the king inquired about the rural electrification programme of the Souss-Massa-Draa region (southern Morocco), and launched a project that will supply 113 douars (small villages) with electricity. The local inhabitants of these douars are estimated at 46,000 people. The global budget of rural electrification in the province of Ouarzazate is estimated at MAD 504 million (around US$59.2 million) covering the period of 1996-2007. By 2007, 98 % of the region will have benefited from the programme. In the commune of Idalsane (25Km east of Ouarzazate), HM the king launched works of the second phase of the programme for the development and cultivation of the palm groves of the Ouarzazate province. The programme, which will cost MAD 20 million (about US$2.35 million), will benefit 2000 peasants and will contribute to the improvement of dates quality. In the commune of Skoura, the Sovereign launched the construction of a youth center that is intended to develop cultural and sports activities. The center will mainly benefit the impoverished youth of the commune. |
