Autonomy project 'hope for Sahrawis whose suffering has long lasted in Tindouf camps'

Abu Dhabi, May 27 - The royal proposal to grant autonomy to the southern provinces within Moroccan sovereignty represents "hope for Sahrawis whose suffering has long lasted in Tindouf camps" (south-east Algeria), underlined Bahraini writer, Mohamed Sayad.
The royal initiative is a historical opportunity that should be grabbed because "it constitutes an adequate platform to settle the Sahara issue and a hope for the Sahrawis whose suffering has long lasted in Tindouf camps, affirmed the writer in an article published Saturday by the UAE Arabic-speaking daily "Al-Khaleej."

Sayad also underlined that "the separatist objectives of the "Polisario" prove to be unworkable considering the international disengagement," noting that the party, which would chose to continue supporting Polisario, would do so for "particular reasons and would wait for something in return."

He concluded that the world, which lives on the pace of political and economic coalitions, does not offer space for small entities, which proves the inadmissibility of the separatist objectives.

In a speech addressed to the nation in March from Laâyoune (1,250km south from Rabat), the Moroccan king announced the new composition of the Royal Advisory Council for Saharan Affairs (CORCAS), confirming the royal proposal to grant autonomy to the southern provinces within Moroccan sovereignty to put an end to the three-decade-long Sahara issue, which was triggered by the claim of the Algeria-backed “Polisario” to separate the Moroccan southern provinces, known as the Sahara, from the motherland, after they were retrieved from Spanish rule in line with the Madrid accords.

Actually I think the whole of the Maghreb is 1 people, etchnic, culture and language. And there are so many sub-groups and tribes. If Morocco falls apart every tribe will demand it’s own government and we will fall into great anarchy, because they do not have the means and knowledge do govern!

I am an original Amazigh! Morocco is changing and giving every group it`s rights. We must focus on autonomy of the regions within the Maghreb Union. No division but unity. Morocco consist of Riffi`s, Cleuh, Jbella, Soussa, Arabs, Moroccan Jews etc. These are all as different as they are alike. Polisario leadership is corrupt. The Sahroui`s who are my brothers are the victims of a plot of the Sahroui leaders and Algerian hegemony in the Maghreb.

It’s not logical to speak of one Sahroui culture and group! The Sahroui`s in Morocco are not 1 group of people, they are actually divided. There are Berbers and Arabs first of all. Most of the Sahroui`s are Arabised berbers( Imazighen) like me from the North of Morocco. We are the original inhabitants of the Maghreb. Look at the names in the Sahara and old rock paintings. Adrar Iforas etc.

Our customs and language is very different from the people in Rabat and I agree that the wealth is not equally spread. Other people and region had also a lot to suffer in past by the human right abuses of the army! Look who is in the army; Sahroui`s, Riffies, Cleuh en Sous berbers, they are all dominant in this army. But the army changes and abuses are something from the past that has changes already a great deal. I saw it with my own eyes. This is because all the groups are demanding their right in the Maghreb. We need you Sahroui`s to be part of Maghreb and Morocco to put pressure on the governments to change. Themore groups we have the more democratic we will be.

It is far to dangerous for 200.000 Sahroui`s to get a county as big as the North of Morocco with 30.000.000 inhabitants of different backgrounds. This would be a great danger for the geopolitics and stability of this region and this group could never defend itself of the terrorist danger. Morocco is a multi-cultural country that is well aware of the cultural background of it’s citizens as well it is an example for the Maghreb countries regarding progressive government and moderate Islamic course.

Of course I want the Sahroui`s to be free, free of corrupt Polisario leadership, Algerian influence in politics, instability. 200.000 people can not govern a country that size!

Now they will get the chance under autonomy from Morocco to prove and govern themselves. I want the Sahroui`s to be free and happy to and the best way is the Moroccan way. Compare Morocco to other countries in the Maghreb! I think if in the future the Maghreb countries will develop more, there would be more space for a Maghreb confederation of sates were all the regions have great autonomy under the Maghreb confederation.

First of all if we are talking about being Moroccan. Sahroui`s are more Moroccan than me. Your custums and language is more like the Arabs of Rabat that descends from Rachidia, you see. Ok! So It`s not about being or feeling Moroccan, It’s about being Maghrebbian. And the best way to govern the Sahara is not division but UNITY in the Maghreb!

Together we can make a change and built up our land! My people the Imazighen are the original inhabitants of the Maghreb and this includes the Sahara. I ask you Sahroui`s lets unite and make Morocco a better country for our children and other future generations. I believe we can do this because we are as much different as we are the same!
