Salaam,
Sparks - please don't bludgeon this forum with polisario revisonist history. It’s a known fact that the main actors within the polisario organisation are Moroccans, you can trace their family lineage.
You make the classic mistake of viewing this issue within the typical western anti-colonial standpoint, thus making comparisons with East Timor etc. But you're missing the point, the people of the sahara are Moroccans, if we pursued your line of thinking then every region within Morocco would be an independent state. Morocco is a diverse nation, just look at it’s history, its people, its geography.
Fortunately for us we didn’t embark on a crusade massacre like so many western nations where the indigenous people were wiped out from the face of the earth (e.g. American Indians, Australian Aboriginies, Roma People in Europe). Your narrow minded perception of nationhood can’t grasp the fact that a nation so diverse as ours is united. Until you understand this your arguments are meaningless. The fact is the polisario is a corrupt and decaying movement, and will soon be forgotten. Algerian funding which was always their life blood is slowing draining away, forcing the band of polisario crooks to resort to organized crime as their income generator. If it were not for the stubbornness and shortsightedness of the mafia generals of Algeria this artificial entity would not have even existed, but their influence in Algerian politics will soon come to an end. When this happens a new era of Maghreb cooperation will begin Insha'Allah.
The polisario have become “Rebels Without a Cause”, indeed they’ve become downright criminals.
Peace.
