Yes we have ham in the UK. It's true about tapeworms, but the eggs are also in beef and some fish and can even be found on unwashed vegetables. It's important to cook food well, then the eggs are distroyed before they're ingested. Tapeworms are still a problem in third world countries where food and animal husbandry is not as good as it could be.
Did you know 100 years or so ago wealthy Victorian women could buy diet pills containing tapeworm eggs. The idea being the tapeworm when grown in their intestine would keep them slim, so they could have the tiny waists that were fashionable at the time..

How gross is that!!!! I'm sure in some places there are people who still think thats a good idea for weight loss....
