The below quotation from the article in your link is really funny...


Performances can last more than 30 minutes, often ending only when the dervish collapses.

It seems to me that this is a corrupted kind of Mevlevi order of dervishes which is founded by Mevlana Celaleddin Rumi in Konya city of Turkey in 13th century... Seemingly those guys "a bit exaggerate" a real whirling ceramony which is actually called "Sema"...



A poem of Mevlana explains why whirling...

A secret turning in us
makes the universe turn.
Head unaware of feet,
and feet head. Neither cares.
They keep turning.


Another poem from him,

"Come, come again, whoever you are, come!
Heathen, fire worshipper or idolatrous, come!
Come even if you broke your penitence a hundred times,
Ours is the portal of hope, come as you are."
