Here is a good book on Islam written by Carl Ernst. Even though it is written mainly for non-Muslims, I think anyone can benefit from reading this book.

Carl Ernst is not a Muslim, but he has written a very well balanced and objective book on Islam. It deals with the contemporary Western criticism of Islam and Muslims.

Carl Ernst is a scholar and an academic but the book is written in a very accessible style.
