jer, it doesn't really matter but according to most accepted traditions our Prophet Muhammed (saw) was of 'average height, large forehead, broad shoulders, fair-medium complexion' (this is from memory). However one of the MOST important companions of the Prophet(saw), Bilal Habshi (RA) was of Abysinian descent and black. Then there was also Salman Farsi (RA) of Persian descent and Suhaib Rumi (RA) who was known as 'Suhaib the Roman' had Blonde hair (**)! So it was truly a diverse community surrounding the Prophet (PBUH). According to Ibn Khateer , the famous 13th century scholar and historian the Arabs during the days of the Prophet (PBUH) divided themselves into 2 groups. 'Arab al-Arabi' and 'Arab al-Mustarab'. Which is 'Arabs of Arabia' and 'the Arabized Arabs'. 'Arabs of Arabia' being the indigenous Arabs from Yemen and elsewhere. While the 'Arabized Arabs' are those who came from outside Arabia and settled in the Arabian Penninsula. The Prophet's (PBUH) tribe, Quraish being of Prophet Abraham's (AS) descent through his elder son Prophet Ismael (AS) were originally from Babylon (now Iraq) and regarded as 'the Arabized Arabs' because they were originally from outside Arabia. So not 'real' Arabs. However what I wrote here may be controversial .... but I am repeating what I heard in a lecture and what is written by the famous historian/scholar Ibn Khateer. In America we do have this black nationlist movement known as the "Islamic-Hebrews" (talk about Oxymoronic ) who claim all prophets were of the 12 black tribes of Ethiopia. However all of this is superflous, as in Islam everyone is equal. The Prophet (PBUH) made it clear in his last sermon that: "An Arab has no superiority over a Non-Arab, a Non-Arab has no superiority over an Arab, a Black has no superiority over a White and a White has no superiority over a black except in terms of piety and righteousness". And as you know right now less than 15% of all Muslims are Arabs. (**)PS: Companion Suhaib ar-Rumi (RA) (Suhaib the Roman) spoke the Roman language and had blonde hair but was not really Roman. He was taken as a slave by Roman soldiers when he was a child, somewhere in Babylon. He could have been of Slavic descent. When he won his freedom, he came down to live in Mecca on advice from a famous Christian soothsayer who foretold the comming of a Prophet in Arabia.

"jer, it doesn't really matter"
that's probably the wisest answer, but believe me, it mattered to these guys, and they would dispute your answer until the final hour. They were adamant that Mohamed was a black man, albeit of Arabic descent. "However all of this is superflous, as in Islam everyone is equal. The Prophet (PBUH) made it clear in his last sermon that: "An Arab has no superiority over a Non-Arab, a Non-Arab has no superiority over an Arab, a Black has no superiority over a White and a White has no superiority over a black except in terms of piety and righteousness". And as you know right now less than 15% of all Muslims are Arabs." That's all well and good, but you must needs admit that Arabs hold a privileged position within Islam, if not on paper then in actuality, by virtue of the fact that Mohamed was an Arab, that the Quran was written in Arabic, and that Islam led to the unification of Arab tribes and the subsequent Arabization of all of North Africa including Morocco and large chunks of the Middle East. |

there was a book about this
Jer your friend probably read about it in this renowned book about the black and arab connection. But like i agree with many of you its doesnt matter- but Mohammed was not a black man. Watch the film ''the message''. a follower named bilal of islam introduced the salat prayer call and he was black and this was enhanced and contrasted because he was black.

Jer the description that was given by Safar is the correct one and there is no confusion about it.
Cool I am not sure where you got that description about Moses(pbuh)? as far as I am aware from the Tourah, according to Exodus (at 34:29 - 35), Moses is depicted as having been horrifically disfigured due to his direct encounter with God. the hebrew phrase "karnu panav" which has the meaning of the word keren "horn" while it also translates "ray", as in "ray of light". "Panav" translates as "his face". If interpreted correctly those two words form an expression which means that he was enlightened, and many rabbinical studies explain that the knowledge that was revealed to him made his face metaphorically shine with enlightenment, and not that it suddenly sported a pair of horns. and that according to the Christians is wrong since they had developed a tradition whereby the devil had horns In Islam We were told that he was very Shy but very strong as a person( he had to be he was the father of Judaism) that's why he asked Allah to sent for Harun to help. very shy because he used to shower himself alone while Jewish tradition at the time everyone used to shower naked together in Rivers. One day he did it alone and his clothes were taken away by something(can't remember) and he chased it naked and everyone realised how normal he was. and God knows best |
