Nadia,
According to sharia terminology, the word Kafir refers exclusively to those who renounce God.
The word Mushrik, refers exclusively to those who worship other things, whether they consider such things Gods or use them as intermediaries to reach the true God.

Jews and Christian are not Kaffirs nor mushriks according to Koran. They are people of the book, and many of them are promised to go to heaven.

Salam Tawfiq,

Very correct. Just to add, many of the people of the book are promised heaven i.e. The monotheists who came before Moses, the Jews who came before Jesus, the Christians who came before Muhammad (may the peace and blessings of Allah SWT be on them all). For those after the final revelation of Allah SWT, the prerequisite is the Shahadah, i.e testification in the fact that there is only one God and that Muhammad SWS is his messenger.

Wa Salam

Salam Guys
Even those who still look Kafeer are not and Only God knows the truth because we do not have the ability to check their hearts.unless they testify when a good state of mind that they are Atheists.

The word Kafeer is the same as cover in English. to cover yourself means you hid from something or someone. so you can find a believer who is hiding from God because he is scared of what he is doing knowing it's wrong hence he is a kafeer but a believer at the same time, so the scholars would call him a Sinner being Muslim or non muslim
Take the example of the man who killed another one in a battle after he declared the Shahada(there is no God but One and Mohammed is his messenger) The prophet was very upset and said"why did you kill him?"
The man replied" because I didn't believe him"
and Mohammed(SAWS) questioned the man by saying " have you opened his heart to check he is lying?"
So we can conclude that unless the person himself declare he is a kafeer we are not allowed to call him such.
Some peopel would try to make anyone who does not follow certain rules Kafeers that is so wrong because even if a man states he is a kafeer we must try not to encourage him to say the word but instead try to bring him to enter Religion.

Salam Wafa
To Understand Kafeer again let's look at the bible because a kafeer will not enter heaven if PROVEN
We Muslims believe in all messages(laws etc..) sent by God to mankind and the main message all Prophets passed on was who will enter Heaven?
Many people in the Gospel asked that very same question
directly to Jesus(pbuh) and let's see what the reply was;
"And behold, one came up to him, saying, "Teacher, what good deed must I do, to have eternal life?"
"And he said to him, "Why do you ask me about what is good? One there is who is good. If you would enter life, keep the
commandments." Matthew 19:16-17
Here according to Jesus, to enter Heaven, we follow the
commandments.
Here again a Lawyer asked the Important Question, How to enter Heaven;
And behold, a lawyer stood up to put him to the test, saying,
"Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?"
Jesus said "What is written in the law? How do
you read?"
And he answered, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your
heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all
your mind; and your neighbor as yourself."
And he said to him, "You have answered right; do this, and you will
live." Luke 10:25-28
The lawyer asked the teacher Jesus how to have eternal life and
Jesus replied "Read"... "The Law"..... "Obey the Law" believe in God and love your neighbor. not Accept Jesus as a God or son of God.
that's what the Muslims believe in
Whoever then relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but he who does them and teaches them shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven." Matthew 5:19

Why would Jesus Teach this if he came so that his blood can relax the Law, why is it when he was on earth, he Taught Not to Relax the Law? And Those who follow the Laws will be the Highest in Heaven.
"Not every one who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' shall enter the
kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven." Matthew 7:21
Allah said"
" But those among them who are well-grounded in knowledge, and the believers, believe in what hath been revealed to thee and what was revealed before thee: And (especially) those who establish regular prayer and practise regular charity and believe in Allah and in the Last Day: To them shall We soon give a great reward."
{Translation of the Holy Qur'an 4:162}
