AIM Statement: Raise Your Voice In Condemnation of Jordanian King

To the people of the world,

The Shia Muslims of Iraq and around the world are in need of your assistance and
ask that you lend a hand in their time of need. The recent developments in Iraq
put the Shia Muslim community under focus and assault from those who lost their
gained interests after the fall of Saddam.

Unfortunately, many Arab leaders have openly attacked Shia Muslims in Iraq on
the basis of their faith. One of the worst statements was made during the last
few days by King Abdullah II of Jordan, who undiplomatically attacked the Shia
Muslims in Iraq and around the world, by trying to frighten neighbouring Arab
governments from the democratic developments which may give the Shia majority
the upper hand in Iraq and the Middle East. His recent statements echo those
made by some parties within Iraq and neighbouring countries, who fear loosing
grip of power in Iraq which they have held unjustly for decades.

Jordanian King Abdullah said that more than 1 million Iranians have crossed the
910-mile border into Iraq, many to vote in the election - with the encouragement
of the Iranian government. "I'm sure there's a lot of people, a lot of Iranians
in there that will be used as part of the polls to influence the outcome," he
said in an interview.

The king also charged that Iranians are paying salaries and providing welfare to
unemployed Iraqis to build pro-Iranian public sentiment. Some Iranians, he
added, have been trained by Iran's Revolutionary Guards and are members of
militias that could fuel trouble in Iraq after the election.

"It is in Iran's vested interest to have an Islamic republic of Iraq . . . and
therefore the involvement you're getting by the Iranians is to achieve a
government that is very pro-Iran," Abdullah said.

If pro-Iran parties or politicians dominate the new Iraqi government, he said, a
new "crescent" of dominant Shi’ite movements or governments stretching from Iran
into Iraq, Syria and Lebanon could emerge, alter the traditional balance of
power between the two main Islamic sects and pose new challenges to U.S.
interests and allies. "If Iraq goes Islamic republic, then, yes, we've opened
ourselves to a whole set of new problems that will not be limited to the borders
of Iraq. I'm looking at the glass half-full, and let's hope that's not the case.
But strategic planners around the world have got to be aware that is a
possibility," Abdullah added.

The Shia Muslim community worldwide strongly deplores such politically motivated
statements, which go against the basic human rights of the people of Iraq.

We appeal to all our brothers and sisters who care for the respect of our faith
and community to raise their voices against such insulting comments, by doing
the following:

Demanding that Iraqi elections take place on time on the 30th January 2005.

A Sample Letter, if you wish to copy and paste it as an e-mail and send it to
the following e-mails above:

To whom it may concern,

It is with regret that I write this letter to inform you of my disappointment
and frustration after becoming aware of the comments of the Jordanian King
Abdullah II.

King Abdullah’s comments have done nothing but create more friction during
turbulent times and added to the flames of the insurgents who aim to stop
democracy in Iraq. The Shia Muslims have as much right to take positions of
authority as the Sunnis, Christians or Jews; and we should allow elections to
decide the fate of the Iraqi people.

The Iraqi people have suffered enough at the hands of others and finally want to
stand on their own two feet, elect their leadership, and abide by the freedoms
many people around the world take for granted.

Yours Faithfully,

[Your Name]

We encourage our brothers and sisters to raise their voice by all peaceful means
possible, including organising pickets in front of Jordanian Embassies,
contacting media outlets and contacting MP’s or other political representatives
to express your concern.
